Dussmann: The Kulturkaufhaus has long been a partner of the Fete, and this year is no different

This year as in previous years, Dussmann, the ‘Kulturkaufhaus’ in the Friedrichstrasse, is enthusiastically taking part in what is set to be a riotiously diverse and exciting online Fete de la (Haus) Musique.

Dussmann, apart from being one of the city’s best-known and most-loved places to not only browse and buy books, CDs and similar, is also a great place to spend a little time – with plentiful spots to sit down and while time away, perusing whatever you may have found on the shelves – or sitting in the marvellous sunken café at the back of the building, with its gently dripping plant wall stretching up multiple metres above you.

Dussmann is interwoven into the cultural life of the city

I’m here to talk to Laura Weidenfeller and Liesl Rebbig about Dussmann’s involvement in the Fete de la Musique: Dussman, a partner of the Fete for over a decade, is interwoven into the cultural life of the city, running regular events – 8-10 on any given month: a lot of writers presenting their books, of course, but also concerts – both classical and contemporary – in any one of their multiple rooms and spaces which they’ve created and developed for this very reason.

“We’ve been involved with the Fete for around a decade,” Laura tells me when we sit together. “It makes a lot of sense for us because it’s a regular event and also because there’s always a lot going on right around here.”

The shop sits in fact some 100 metres from the Friedrichstrasse S-Bahnhof and is surrounded by one of the main historical and cultural areas of Berlin, and the Gendarmenmarkt is only a few blocks away, where just last year over 3,000 people met to take part in the Fete’s Europe-wide singalong, and let their voices raise over the square with Ode to Joy, What a Wonderful World and more.

Laura tells me about the events they usually run, and how the artists are often provided by Berlin-based music labels. “It’s also nice to have a chance to be able to try out different things during the Fete, and be able to feature interesting local artists – it’s turned into one of our most beloved projects. The people are so open, since they’re drifting from place to place during the day, and they turn up here when perhaps they weren’t aware of us before.”

And what’s planned for this Sunday, I ask?

“A lot’s going on. One great aspect is that we’ve partnered with a local music school that’s very active, Fanny Hensel, and they came to us and we got something together quite quickly. We’re also working with the Stadtmuseen (city museums); and with a firm who provide technical musical capabilities.

Earlier on we’re doing something with the music school – something with the pop students, then with the classical students…then we’ve even got an Indian music hour, since we wanted really to incorporate the world music aspect.

The City museums are producing two videos, one a brass ensemble, and one a crossover musical artist.

And we’ve got someone performing here in store – that’s Phil Siemers; and we’re streaming the punk band Kassetten Ricardo out of the Frannzclub. In the shop we’ll also have a talk in the cafe, it’ll be filmed and streamed.

FETE BERLIN: What do you expect of the Fête de la Musique 2020?

DIKUMBI: I would love for people to feel a little release and joy in these times that are so intense!!! Music was so important in the last months to me, reminding me of its healing effects.
So I wish for people to lean back and let the music flush away some of the sorrows and be in the moment with us! Sing along, dance, shake it out from where ever you are watching!!!

FETE BERLIN: Your best memory of a Fête de la Musique is?

DIKUMBI: Me and my partner walked into the Görlitzer Park and there was a band just starting to play. An amazing drummer and a wicked wind section. the sun was glistening, more and more people arrived and the musicians made us one after the other: move, dance and lose it! And here we were, the middle of such a beautiful summer day, dancing our pains and sorrows out until only joy was left.
This was an ecstatic moment !!! Feeling connected to this city, these people, and to music! Still grateful for this day,..

FETE BERLIN: What does music and Berlin mean – and what does Berlin with music mean?

DIKUMBI: This city lives from the vibrant creativity we – the artists – are bringing. I feel that I could hear music coming from so many different places of the world here if looking for it right!
I came here for the music, like many do and definitely was inspired, taught and formed through Berlin. I deeply hope that the city keeps on supporting us…so what makes Berlin so unique is valued.

Which is why we’re doubly excited to have him as our artist playing from the very top of the Alexanderplatz TV tower this Sunday as part of the Fete de la Musique.

When we came up with the idea of having someone perform from the viewing platform of the TV tower that boasts absolutely stunning views across the city, we knew it would be brilliant; and when Alle Farben agreed to be the man of the hour the deal was sealed.

Alle Farben will be playing for just over an hour from 10pm to 11:15pm this Sunday the 21st June, streaming various platforms and of course live on the #FETEBerlin website!

  • Fête de la Musique interviews “Las Brumas”

Fête de la Musique interviews “Las Brumas”

Today in the limelight: Las Brumas, who filled out the FETEBerlin interview.

Please introduce yourself or your band / project – where are you from, what kind of music do you play, what would you like to tell us about yourself?

    Las Brumas:

Hailing from Santiago, Chile, Las Brumas is the project of musician and artist Yanara Zarhi, which leads us easily through dreamy folk/pop and rock, with an energy and power not often seen. Deep themes that explodes with rock-like chords that then break into almost tribal dance rhythms.

Since may 2019 when the artist moved to Berlin, she starts to perform as solo project in multiple venues. After the social explosion that occurred in Chile in October 2019, Las Brumas has been part of the events organized by the Chilean community in Berlin, as a way to make visible and support the causes of the Chilean people.

“En las piedras” (Single, August 2018. Sultan Discos)
“Umbral” (LP March 2019. Sultan Discos)

FETE BERLIN: Next year on 21 June you look back on this year and think:

Las Brumas: I would think how strange it has been to look for new ways to keep in touch with people in these times of pandemic.
Streaming concerts was a way we probably imagined for “the future”, but it’s happening now.
So, I would also think how happy I am to be part of “Fête de la Haus-Musique 2020” for the first time.

FETE BERLIN: What does music and Berlin mean – and what does Berlin with music mean?

Las Brumas: If I can express this in a symbolic way, I would say that:

Berlin is a void in time and space which is always mutating. I read somewhere that “Berlin is never Berlin” and it has been in my mind since. Music, like the people who pass through this city, is always something different. Like every musician who comes to Berlin, inevitably absorbs that “Berlin spirit”, something like a timeless and spaceless magic.

You can find Las Brumas’s first album Umbral on Spotify

  • The countdown’s begun and we can’t wait…the FETE’s around the corner!

The countdown’s begun and we can’t wait…the FETE’s around the corner!

When it came to the crunch, a few short weeks ago, with festivals toppling left, right and centre, we decided then that we would make the FETE happen: even if we had to change the whole concept around to make sure that everyone would remain safe and be on the good side of the new regulations, we would somehow, somewhere, celebrate music.

We were joined in that decision by all the other cities across Europe and the world who also celebrate Make Music Day: because we all believe that it’s especially now, in times of crisis, when people need music the most.

Working on coming up with as many ways as we could to make and enjoy music on the 21st June 2020, we were also deeply impressed by all the organisers, stage partners, creatives and musicians who threw themselves into the quest too.

    So far?

We’ve got the Singalong happening, with its very own Singalong Songbook (available any day now as download from our lovely FETEBerlin website – watch this space!)

Last year was the culmination of the idea of getting as many people to gather together, in each city across Europe, and at exactly the same moment, to all sing along to one common European song (Ode to Joy), with each country coming up with a couple more songs that would vibe with their local inclinations. Last year was amazing, with some 3,000 people gathering together in Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt to sing not only Ode to Joy but also Imagine and Ein Hoch Auf Uns. I was there, and it was definitely a goosebump moment (see the video).

This year that’s not possible of course, but instead we’re branding the hour of 5-6pm on the 21st June as Singalong hour: we’ve put our heads together, phoned a friend, done the Publikums Joker, and come up with 12 songs that not only reflect what we think music is at its best, but also resonate in a variety of ways with our society right now. Oh yes, and they’re all infinitely catchy and hummable, of course ;).

There’ll be a songbook to download from our site, and not only that: we also urge people to try out performing the songs not only on the 21st but also in the next few weeks that lead up to the magical date: send us your performances, and we’ll put the best in a Youtube playlist and on the site!

    We’ve got live Streams Galore

With partners including United We Stream and Berlin Alive (and a bunch more) we’ll be helping to conduce and coordinate a constant, well, stream of live streams throughout the afternoon and evening, with a load of people stepping up to the plate to perform, from pro musicians to your neighbour with a ukulele – everyone’s not only invited, we  implore and exhort you to leave your shyness to one side for the day and display your musical wares: because#MakeMusicDay’s not only for the pros and upper echelons, it’s for everybody: if you can hardly carry a tune, if you’ve just figured your first C chord, we want you!

    And there’s more, much more…

Like I say, watch this space – and while you’re at it, dig out those instruments, give them a shine, run through your scales and arpeggiatos, and let’s make this 21st June a #FETE to remember – whether we’re online, offline, on a boat, a rickshaw or singing sweet nothings down a telephone line to your one and only!

  • Songs born across the Atlantic

    Songs born across the Atlantic

How big is the world nowadays?

For Eloy and Walter, members of Alien Bird, fortunately in these technological times, it’d be small.
They produce their songs, each one in their home studio, 11.500 km away between Berlin and Buenos Aires, exchanging files across the Atlantic and once the idea is closed, it is mixed, mastered and voila, uploaded to all the current virtual platforms, independently.

It all started at The Cavern Club in Buenos Aires, where they played in different rock bands, as interpreters. After meeting each other they discovered they had the chemistry to work together on their own songs.
But in 2017 Walter moved to Berlin and started composing in English and playing in acoustic format in the “Open stage” scene of the German capital. At the same time, no matter how far away they were, both musicians decided to start this new dynamic, to work from continent to continent.
Currently in Berlin they have Emilio Quezada from Barcelona on drums (who is in charge of mixing the songs as well) so in the near future they will start playing live as well.http://spoti.fi/2JHnR4H
