Greener Fête de la Musique

With the “Greener Fête de la Musique” project, we aim to help make events held as part of Fête de la Musique Berlin as responsible as possible and to implement measures that reduce environmental impact. At the same time, we want to develop Fête de la Musique further as an open and inclusive cultural space — one that enables cultural participation and makes social diversity visible.

Greener Fête supports music venues and participants in organising their events in a more resource-conscious way, and in giving greater consideration to aspects such as accessibility, diversity, and respectful interaction.

To make this happen, we’re counting on your support.

Get Active!

In the “A Greener Fête de la Musique Berlin” action guide, you’ll find tips, ideas, and good practices for measures that can be implemented at events held as part of Fête de la Musique. These range from resource-conscious event organisation and climate-friendly mobility to measures for greater accessibility, inclusion, and neighbourly consideration.

The action guide and checklist offer a first point of orientation and help you factor sustainability in from the start — whether you’re already implementing individual measures or just setting out on this path.

Support with sustainability management

For organisers who want to plan, deliver, and develop their music venue at Fête de la Musique Berlin more sustainably, the Greener Fête measures programme offers hands-on support.

It helps you select suitable measures for your venue, plan concrete steps, and make progress visible.

Catalogue of measures

At its core is a catalogue of measures that lets you systematically select, implement, and document sustainability actions. A complementary data collection template helps you capture relevant key figures and track developments in a transparent way.

This is how a simple, practice-oriented sustainability management approach takes shape for your music venue, step by step — tailored to your possibilities, resources, and circumstances.

Taking feasible steps

With this measures programme, we want to set concrete changes in motion, share knowledge, and work together to build a more sustainable Fête.

It’s not about perfection, but about feasible steps, honest implementation, and continuous development.

The catalogue of measures and the data collection template are available on request at greenerfete@birte-jung.de.

Green Deal

As part of a Green Deal, Fête de la Musique Berlin committed in 2021 to further developing measures that give greater consideration to sustainability and climate protection in how the event is delivered.

At the same time, Fête de la Musique Berlin aims to play a driving role on a national level: Fête de la Musique is celebrated in more than 170 German cities, and many of these places face similar challenges.

Due to its decentralised structure, with numerous venues across both public and private spaces, Fête de la Musique Berlin involves particular organisational demands.

Different locations and infrastructures come with different conditions, which makes planning and implementing strategic sustainability management especially challenging.

The Green Deal forms a basis for giving greater consideration to ecological and social aspects as the event develops in the coming years, and for advancing measures for climate protection and responsible event organisation.

With the Greener Fête Charter, we invite stage operators, musicians, suppliers, and visitors to join us in working towards a responsibly designed Fête de la Musique Berlin.

The Charter outlines key thematic areas and possible measures that music venues can consider when organising their events.

Core Themes and Guiding Principles of the Charter are:

Resources and environment

Sustainable Procurement and Catering

Climate-Friendly Mobility

Social Justice and Neighborhood

Data Collection and Communication

Are you a music venue, organiser, or supporter of a Greener Fête de la Musique — in Berlin or elsewhere — and would like to sign the Charter?

What does signing the Greener Fête Charter mean?

By signing the Greener Fête Charter, music venues, organisers, and participants declare their intention to take the topics and measures described in the Charter into account when organising their events. These include, among others, resource conservation, more climate-friendly mobility, responsible procurement, and aspects such as accessibility, diversity, and respectful interaction.

The Greener Fête Charter is intended as an invitation to develop Fête de la Musique together — towards events that give greater consideration to ecological and social aspects. It can also be signed by Fête de la Musique organisers outside Berlin, and is at the same time meant as an impulse for jointly developing a sustainability charter for Fête de la Musique across Germany.

    Note

The Greener Fête Charter is a voluntary commitment. Signing it does not constitute a certification or award. The measures described are implemented within the respective organisational possibilities of the participating music venues and organisers.

    Background and initiation

The “Greener Fête de la Musique” project was launched in 2019 together with Dr Birte Jung, an expert in sustainable events in public spaces; Jacob Bilabel, founder of the Green Music Initiative; and the stage organisers who bring the Fête to life every year.

    NEW GREEN DEAL

In 2021, Fête de la Musique Berlin reaffirmed this commitment with a Green Deal, pledging to give greater consideration to ecological and social aspects as the event continues to develop.

    • Dr. Klaus Lederer (Senator for Culture and Europe 2021)
    • Katja Lucker (Director Musicboard Berlin 2021)
    • Dr. Birte Jung (Transformation Manager for Sustainable Culture)
    • Jacob Bilabel (a.o. Green Music Initiative)
    • Björn Döring (Fête de la Musique Berlin)

    Project outcomes 2023

In 2023, important foundations were laid for the further development of Greener Fête. This was made possible through infrastructure funding from Initiative Musik. As part of the project, an indicator system was developed that allows Fête de la Musique music venues to collect data on topics such as energy consumption, waste generation, and artist mobility.

Three pilot stages — the Greener Fête pilots — were supported through the data collection process. Based on the data gathered, sample carbon footprints were produced, serving as a starting point for developing goals and measures.
