As part of a Green Deal, the Fête de la Musique Berlin 2021 has committed to intensifying sustainability and climate protection in the event’s implementation, but also to taking on a pilot function at the national level in over 80 German cities that celebrate the Fête de la Musique.

The Fête de la Musique, due to its decentralized structure and over 150 different locations in Berlin, which include private and public, both open-air and indoor spaces, is confronted with unique challenges.

This diversity brings different conditions and infrastructures, which makes the planning and implementation of a strategic sustainability management particularly challenging. The Green Deal is the cornerstone for designing the event ecologically and socially responsibly in the coming years and contributing its part to climate protection and holistic sustainability.

By creating this Sustainability Charter, we as the organizers of the Fête de la Musique Berlin call on all stage operators, musicians, suppliers, and visitors of the event to work together for an ecologically and socially responsible Fête de la Musique. We commit ourselves to promoting and implementing sustainable practices.

Core Themes and Guiding Principles of the Charter are:

Resource Efficiency and Waste Management

Sustainable Procurement and Catering

Climate-Friendly Mobility

Social Justice and Neighborhood

Data Collection and Communication

    Background and initiation

The project “Greener Fête de la Musique” was initiated in 2019 together with Dr Birte Jung, expert for sustainable events in urban open spaces, Jacob Bilabel, founder of Green Music Initiative, and the stage organizers who put on the Fête every year.

    NEW GREEN DEAL

In 2021 Fête de la Musique Berlin reaffirmed this commitment with a Green Deal and pledged to make the major event more environmentally and socially sustainable in the future. The signatories of the Green Deal include:

    • Dr. Klaus Lederer (Senator for Culture and Europe 2021)
    • Katja Lucker (Director Musicboard Berlin 2021)
    • Dr. Birte Jung (Transformation Manager for Sustainable Culture)
    • Jacob Bilabel (a.o. Green Music Initiative)
    • Björn Döring (Fête de la Musique Berlin)

In 2023, thanks to infrastructure funding from the Initiative Musik, we were able to achieve important progress towards sustainability at the Fête de la Musique.

The results of our project are a valuable contribution to the design of sustainable cultural and music events and can be applied across Europe at the Fête de la Musique. Greener Fête is thus actively working towards an ecologically, socially, and culturally sustainable future in the cultural sector.
